Custom Mouth Guard for Playing Sports

You can still play the sports you love during your orthodontic treatment. You just have to take extra precautions to protect your orthodontic appliances and the inside of your mouth!

Since braces are made of metal and wires, their presence in your mouth can cause a lot of damage if you sustain a blow to the face. The appliances themselves may also be damaged. Plus, because your teeth will be a bit looser during orthodontic treatment, they can be more easily damaged during impact.

A custom-made mouthguard from Vivid Orthodontics can help:

  • Protect your teeth from potential injury when you play sports
  • Reduce the risk of facial fractures
  • Lower the chance of concussion

Why Custom Sports Mouthguards?

Trauma Prevention

Braces add hardware to your mouth. A blow to the face can drive these brackets into your lips and cheeks. A custom guard acts as a shock absorber to prevent soft tissue lacerations and broken brackets.

Reducing Concussion Risk

A properly fitted mouthguard helps absorb shock and stabilize the jaw during impact. This cushioning effect can significantly lower the force transmitted to the skull, reducing the risk of concussion.

Breathability

Store-bought "boil and bite" guards are often bulky and loose, making it hard to breathe during intense cardio. Our custom guards are streamlined and stay in place so you can focus on the game, not your gear.

Protecting the Investment

Your teeth are slightly looser during treatment as they move. This makes them more vulnerable to trauma. A custom guard locks them in place, protecting both the roots and the expensive hardware attached to them.

Athletes Ask Us.

Choosing braces for a young child is a different decision than choosing them for a teenager. Here are the answers to the questions we hear most often from parents of our 7-to-10-year-old patients.

Yes, and you absolutely should. Brackets can cut the inside of your lips severely if you get hit. A mouthguard provides a critical barrier between the metal and your soft tissue.

Rinse it with cool water and brush it with a toothbrush and toothpaste after every use. Never use hot water as it can warp the shape. Store it in a ventilated case to let it dry completely between games.

Because your teeth are actively moving, your custom guard may eventually feel tight. If it no longer fits comfortably, bring it to your next appointment. We may be able to adjust it, or we will take a new impression to ensure protection continues as your smile changes.

We recommend protection for any activity with a risk of contact or falls. This includes obvious contact sports like hockey, football, and lacrosse, but also basketball, soccer, gymnastics, and skateboarding.
